First Time Login

On first login, you will be prompted to change your root password. Change it and make sure that you can recall the new password.

Change the MY SQL Root Password

The default LAMP installation uses a random password for MySQL root. You will be asked to change it. The current password is displayed when you login.

Issue the following command to change the MySQL root password.

mysqladmin -u root -p 'xxxx' password 'yyyy'

Replace xxxx with the current password and yyyy with the new password. Please see the screen-shot below.

Run Secure MySQL Installation

Issue the following command to start the secure installation of MySQL

mysql_secure_installation

Since we have already changed the mysql root password, you can safely say no to the 'root password change' prompt.

Running mysql secure installation

Follow the on screen instructions and complete the installation.

Update and Upgrade Ubuntu

Issue the following commands to update ubuntu

apt-get update

apt-get upgrade

Upgrade Ubuntu

Follow the on screen instructions and select yes if asked to confirm the upgrade.

Install php5-curl and unzip

We require php5-curl for Watch My Domains SED. Issue the following command to install it.

apt-get install php5-curl

Watch My Domains SED is provided as a ZIP file. You will need unzip to open it. Install unzip by issuing the following command.

apt-get install unzip

Remove the MySQL message of the day and reboot.

Type the following to remove the MySQL password message and reboot the system.

rm -rf /etc/motd.tail

shutdown -r now

Reboot Ubuntu
